Photography

Photography may be generally defined as the art of using light rays to form an image but photography is often more than just taking a photo with a camera, it is about creating something that is real and aesthetically pleasing or remarkable in its own right. Photography is about the entire process from finding the object to photograph, framing the photograph, processing the image and presenting the image.

It's everything around us, and it's yourself, it materializes subjective impressions, a picture that only the artist can see while others will pass by. Photography and art isn’t limited to the medium, it's more than that. It is the individual relation between the artist and the world. Photography is about seeing things, finding a meaning and this is more than clicking a button.

The camera simply allows us catch the image; it is the artist who sees it. It takes a moment, and stretches it to infinity, photography gives us the calm of observing that moment properly, and life is like this: full of clutter and very special moments.

Thomas H. Jäkel started photography 30 years ago with his first camera a Rolleiflex SL35 and Zeiss lenses. This beloved camera accompanied him for many years on his travels to Asia but was later replaced by a Nikon FG and eventually by a Nikon D100.

People and their gestures, facial expressions or their very simple existence are the main focus of attention that runs through the various series of photographs.

Having spent the majority of the last 20 years in Asia, the motives of his pictures often come from Asia and express the fascination with this continent.

On the following pages you will find more detailed information about his pictures, photographs and writings. Please visit the galleries to get your own impression about his artistic work.
