Course Outline

This course takes a socio-technical approach towards the understanding of the issues and implications of an organization's Information Technology System. It also views the IT system as being part of the all-encompassing Information Technology. It will emphasize the analysis, design, implementation and control of the IT system that places priority on sustaining a competitive edge. Issues that relate to the success or failure, the learning organization and management framework to ensure a successful IT system will be covered. The main goal is to understand and appreciate the intricacies of the IT system from a managerial perspective and in managing it as a strategic resource for competitive advantage. This means that a lot of the key issues and framework will be covered in the external readings.

The course covers the comprehensive area of business innovation and IT-based organizational transformation providing practical guidelines for professional corporate process restructuring. Participants will gain comprehensive understanding of underlying principles, success factors and will be provided with concepts, tools and techniques of process reengineering. These concepts and techniques only can be effectively applied to modern organizations once a total approach is chosen and once the cultural, corporate and business demands are clearly understood and implemented in corporate process restructuring.

Implementation of isolated measures and concepts have proven to be exposed to dramatic risks and call for a more comprehensive if not total approach in projects. Participants will learn to develop restructuring concepts on the basis of in-depth understanding of corporate mechanisms and will be introduced to all practical steps and phases of corporate process restructuring.

Due to its complexity, the particular aspects of IT-based organizational transformation will be addressed in this final section of the course to provide participants with an opportunity to apply the learned and to put emphasis of the design of an IT based organization of the future. Participants will obtain a clear view on developments in the IT market and their implications on businesses and business processes. IT-based transformation can only be achieved once the management has the understanding of technological opportunities and their impact on the business.
